A LITTLE MARKMAKING MIX + MINGLE

Some more mark making in the sketchbook. I love making marks. I could sit and make marks all day long..It’s rather meditative and always fun to search the house for interesting mark making tools.

It is also an opportunity to play with different colour combinations, new brushes and lots of different mediums. I also love how the different layers interact and overlap each other with just a touch of the previous layer peeking through to remind us that it is also part of the story.

The goal is to always try something new - a new tool, some different types of marks and even some new textures. My favourite these days is scratching through. A little thick paint spread on with a palette knife and you have yourself a perfect surface to scratch.

Here I made my marks on absorbent coffee filters. I scrunched them up so that I would have lots of nooks and crannies to work with. I dropped ink onto them, drew lines with pencil, crayon and oil pastel. I used all the neutral colours so that my pops of Pink would shine through. I loved how they turned out.

I love the sense of freedom created with no worry about composition or what it is. It’s just a bunch of marks that look pretty awesome if I say so myself.

These are a great resource to have on hand for inspiration or to use in collage work or art journalling.
